Grim Fandango

Grim Fandango was a classic adventure game developed and published by LucasArts in 1998. The game takes place in the Land of the Dead, a stylized version of the afterlife inspired by Mexican folklore and film noir. The player controls the character of Manuel “Manny” Calavera, a travel agent working for the Department of Death who helps souls on their journey to the afterlife. Manny becomes embroiled in a conspiracy involving stolen souls and a corrupt underworld.
Grim Fandango was well-received for its unique setting, engaging storyline, and memorable characters. It was praised for its art design, which combined elements of Art Deco and Aztec art, and its use of pre-rendered 3D graphics to create a fully-realized 3D world.

Grim Fandango does not have traditional levels in the sense of a platformer or action game. Instead, the game is structured around a series of interconnected locations that the player must explore and interact with in order to progress the story.
The game is divided into four acts, each taking place in a different area of the Land of the Dead. These acts are:
- Year One: The player is introduced to Manny Calavera and the Department of Death, and must help several souls make their way to the afterlife.
- Year Two: Manny travels to the city of Rubacava and becomes embroiled in a larger conspiracy involving a powerful crime boss.
- Year Three: Manny sets out on a journey to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy, encountering a variety of strange and dangerous locations along the way.
- Year Four: The final act sees Manny confronting the true villains of the game and unraveling the mysteries of the Land of the Dead.
The game’s progression is more about uncovering the story and solving puzzles rather than traditional levels with increasing difficulty.
Despite critical acclaim, Grim Fandango did not sell as well as expected upon release, partially due to declining interest in adventure games at the time.
However, the game has since become a cult classic and is considered one of the greatest adventure games of all time. It has been remastered and re-released on various platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
